Case study: BMW 328i xDrive F30 drivetrain service

A BMW 328i xDrive (F30) sedan with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (N20) came to the RemZone auto service center in Warsaw’s Mokotów district for scheduled maintenance. The vehicle had passed the 100,000 km mileage mark.

The owner decided to service the drivetrain preventively to reduce the risk of premature wear of the differential components. There were no complaints about unusual noises or vibrations while driving.

Diagnostics: What condition was the oil in?

Since BMW did not provide conventional drain plugs on the rear differential of the F30 from the factory, the condition of the oil is assessed during extraction through the filler opening. For the front differential, the oil is drained through the drain plug and assessed during the service.

The technicians took a sample of the oil from the front differential. The result of the visual comparison (see photo below):

On the left (fresh hypoid oil) – a clear, light amber fluid with the typical appearance of fresh gear oil.

On the right (used oil) – a black, cloudy fluid with visible wear particles and a characteristic burnt smell.

The oil was extracted from the rear differential using a thin probe inserted into the differential housing and a special pump. The used oil passes through a hose into a transparent container, allowing the mechanic to assess its color, cloudiness, and the presence of contaminants.

The degradation was most likely caused by normal aging and thermal loads. Over time, gear oil deteriorates and may accumulate metallic particles generated by normal gear and bearing wear. This can occur when the oil has not been changed for a long period of time.

Solution, cost and time

The customer approved a complete oil change in the front and rear differentials.

Step-by-step work process at the RemZone service bay

• The vehicle was secured on a lift, and the factory underbody protective panels were removed. The front and rear differential housings, as well as the axle shaft seals, were inspected for signs of seepage and leaks.
• Using specialized extraction equipment, the used oil was pumped out of the rear differential through the filler opening, while the oil from the front differential was drained through the drain plug.
• The amount of removed oil was measured and compared with the specified fill volume. The differential housings and seals were also inspected for visible signs of leakage.
• Using a pressure filler and a curved hose, fresh hypoid gear oil meeting the appropriate BMW specification was added first to the front and then to the rear differential, until the oil reached the lower edge of the filler opening, according to the service procedure.
• New sealing washers were installed on the drain and filler plugs as required, and the plugs were tightened with a torque wrench according to the applicable BMW service specifications.
• The differential housings were cleaned of oil residue using a suitable technical cleaning agent, and the underbody protection was reinstalled.
• A road test was performed to check the operation of the drivetrain under load.

Result

The used oil in the BMW 328i differentials was replaced with fresh oil meeting the appropriate BMW specification. Replacing degraded oil helps maintain proper lubrication of the gears and bearings and can help reduce wear. No abnormal noises were detected after the oil change, and the drivetrain was operating normally.
