Why do turbochargers fail?

A turbocharger usually needs reconditioning every 120,000–150,000 km. Sometimes, though, repair or cleaning becomes necessary much sooner. Accelerated wear typically follows from dirty oil, air and oil filters that have not been cleaned or replaced for a long time, a turbo running under heavy load and overheating regularly, sand or dirt getting into the intake, or driving in cold weather without warming the engine.

Replacing a complete turbo assembly can be expensive, so it pays to treat it carefully and follow the operating rules.

What signs indicate the turbo needs checking?

You can tell the turbocharger needs diagnosis, and possibly repair, from the following:

• Power drops under acceleration. This can follow from poorer air compression or a leak in the system.
• Fuel consumption rises. This usually happens because air pressure in the cylinders is too low, so the fuel does not burn efficiently.
• Smoke appears. If there is more exhaust smoke and it has taken on a bluish tint, that can indicate an oil leak or damage to the compressor.
• Whistling, noise or odd sounds from the engine. These can point to wear in the turbo components.
• Visible damage, oil stains, loose mountings, cracks and so on.

If you notice any problem with the turbo system, come to the workshop straight away. There is a chance it will only need the throttle body or EGR cleaning. Sometimes, though, more serious work is required.

Types of repair

Our RemZone workshop in Warsaw carries out various kinds of reconditioning work:

• Standard repair, which usually means replacing the journal bearings and thrust bearings and removing carbon and other contamination inside the housing. This option also includes decoking the oil system, balancing the shaft and restoring the unit's factory specification.
• Full overhaul, covering a wide range of work. The unit is stripped into its main components: housing, cartridge, wheels, shafts and bearings. Their condition is assessed, and they are cleaned, repaired or replaced as needed. The turbo is then reassembled, balanced and tested (pressure-tested and run on a rig) before being refitted.

At our workshop you can book either a complete turbocharger overhaul or repair and replacement of individual parts. We offer, for example: EGR and crankcase ventilation cleaning, reconditioning, and replacement of the actuator and the turbo cartridge.
