Scheduled servicing: oil and filter changes at RemZone
Scheduled servicing is a complete package of work that keeps a car running properly and identifies and fixes faults. It can include changing the engine oil, the fuel filter, the spark plugs and other components. Keeping to the service schedule is what keeps a car safe and reliable. The recommended intervals vary and are normally set out by the manufacturer in the owner's handbook, though sometimes a service is needed sooner. To be sure, come to our workshop in Warsaw. What does a scheduled service include, and when is it done?
Below is an outline of the main work carried out at our workshop, though the list may be adjusted for the make and model and the manufacturer's recommendations.
We check the level and condition of the engine oil and the coolant, brake, hydraulic and transmission fluids. We also check battery voltage and capacity, and the tyres and their pressures. The braking system is assessed: pads, discs, drums, hoses and pipes. We check the condition of the steering and suspension, the timing belt and the alternator. We also test the electrical equipment, lighting and alarm. Every system is checked thoroughly for leaks.
The necessary lubrication work is carried out: changing the engine oil and the fuel filter. Where required, the transmission oil in the gearbox, axles and transfer case is renewed. Joints, door hinges, locks, seals and propshaft universal joints are greased wherever the design provides for it.
All necessary adjustments are made: headlight alignment is set and the brakes are checked, particularly the handbrake. Wheel alignment angles and belt tension are also checked.
Filters are cleaned or replaced. The fuel filter change is a popular service at our workshop, as are the air and cabin filters. The crankcase ventilation system is flushed if needed.
Computer diagnostics of the ECU is carried out to identify any fault codes, and the alternator, starter and battery charging are checked.
Other work may also be done during a scheduled service – checking the bodywork for corrosion and damage, for example. Everything at our Warsaw workshop is carried out with quality consumables and in strict accordance with the manufacturer's schedule.
Preventive maintenance intervals
A full service is carried out to the following schedule:
- After 1,000–2,000 km on a new car we recommend checking fluid levels and tightening the fixings.
- Every 10,000–15,000 km, or once a year, we recommend changing the oil and the fuel filter.
- Every 20,000–30,000 km, or once every two years, we recommend changing the air, cabin and fuel filters and the brake fluid, and checking the suspension and steering, the battery, and the passive and active safety systems.
- At 60,000 km, or every 4–5 years, the spark plugs, timing belt, coolant and gearbox oil need replacing.
